Driver gets two years for speeding after his van caught fire

Upchurch, New Zealand (Reuters) A New Zealand man has been ordered to pay a $2,500 fine for driving his van over a speed limit and then catching fire, police said on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old man was rear-ended by the van at around 4.30am on March 7, 2017, on Highway 1 between Upchurch and Tauranga in New Zealand’s south, New Plymouth police said in a statement.

The man was in the front passenger seat and was transported to hospital with burns on his body, according to the statement.

Police say the van had been stolen and a search for the man’s vehicle is ongoing.

The New Plymouth Police Service said it was the first such incident reported in New Plymouth.
